Grade 3CR12 is a low-cost, chromium-containing stainless steel created by modifying the properties of Grade 409 stainless. It resists mild corrosion and wet abrasion and was originally developed by Columbus Stainless, a South African manufacturer of ferritic and austenitic stainless steel ) who registered the trademark “3CR12”. Other designations of this grade include UNS S40977/S41003 and 1.4003. It was developed as an alternative material for construction where the mechanical properties, corrosion resistance and fabrication requirements of other materials such as mild steel, galvanised steel, aluminised steel, aluminium or pre-painted steels are unsuitable.

3CR12 was developed as an alternative material where the mechanical properties, corrosion resistance and fabrication requirements of other materials such as mild steel, galvanised, aluminium, or pre-painted steels are unsuitable.

3CR12 is a corrosion resisting steel and, as such, will exhibit staining when exposed to aggressive atmospheric conditions. In applications where aesthetic appearance is important, it is recommended that the 3CR12 be painted or that a stainless steel such as 304 be used.
